Dr. Kolber's path into pain medicine began in the emergency department. After earning his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University, he completed his residency in emergency medicine there, followed by a fellowship in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound. It was in the ED,  placing ultrasound-guided nerve blocks for patients in acute pain, that his interest in regional anesthesia and interventional pain techniques took hold. That interest led him to a fellowship in Pain Medicine at the University of Michigan, where he trained in the full spectrum of interventional procedures used to treat chronic pain.

Dr. Kolber is board certified in emergency medicine and holds a Focus Practice Designation in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound. Before and during his fellowship training, he served as a Clinical Instructor of Emergency Medicine at SUNY Upstate, where he was an attending physician across both the academic tertiary care campus and a community-affiliated site. He also practiced as a locums emergency medicine physician at multiple local hospitals across the Northeast, including several Level II trauma and designated ACS and stroke centers.

A dedicated educator, Dr. Kolber designed and implemented a regional anesthesia curriculum for the SUNY Upstate Emergency Medicine department, training residents and faculty in ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, skills that carry directly into his interventional pain practice today. Over the course of his training, he delivered numerous lectures and hands-on ultrasound workshops to residents, fellows, attendings, and medical students.

His interest in research began as an undergraduate at McGill University, where he studied biology and philosophy and co-authored a paper on microbial community resilience published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He also contributed to published studies on multimodal imaging in Alzheimer's disease during a research fellowship at Penn Medicine's Department of Nuclear Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the International Pain and Spine Intervention Society, and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Kolber continues to work in the Emergency Department at a few different hospitals in the DMV area, roasts his own coffee, a longtime hobby, and can usually be found on the golf course, ski slope, or in the kitchen experimenting with a new recipe or making old favorites.
